SUZIE LOVES: Fornasetti

Piero Fornasetti’s ‘brand’ as a designer, if I can use the word brand given he was born in 1913, is amongst the most iconic I can think of.  Perhaps it’s the ladies eyes on the ‘face plates’, which capture and hold your gaze that make them unforgettable. There are many reasons to absolutely love his witty, classical and visionary illustrations that transform common objects into works of art.

The face plates (called Tema e Variazioni), which he made between 1950-1988, feature the 19th-century Italian opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Asked what inspired him to create more than 500 variations on the face of a woman, he replied, “I don’t know. I began to make them and I never stopped.”

He was definitely a character! The personal history of this inspired ‘style creator’ is brimming with stories including being expelled from the Brera Art Academy in Milan in 1932 for insubordination and spending 3 years ‘designing’ in Switzerland during World War II.

His designs are unique, surreal and captivating. Cavalieri’s ancient Greek-esque look imbues Fornasetti’s style with a classical look, which is enhanced by the monochrome colouring. The designs have been inventively applied to chairs, tables, trays, crockery, candles, wallpaper and much more, creating inspired ways to bring the brand into your home. Watch this space my friends, for Tema e Variazioni coming to Dublin! (fornasetti.com).

Asteroids

There is a lot of exciting stuff going on in the stars above us that make astronomy so much fun.  The truth is the universe is a constantly changing, moving, some would say “living” thing because you just never know what you are going to see on any given night of stargazing. But of the many celestial phenomenons, there is probably none as exciting as that time you see your first asteroid on the move in the heavens.  To call asteroids the “rock stars” of astronomy is simultaneously a bad joke but an accurate depiction of how astronomy fans view them.  Unlike suns, planets and moons, asteroids are on the move, ever changing and, if they appear in the night sky, exciting and dynamic. Like rock stars, asteroids have been given their fair share of urban myth and lore.  Many have attributed the extinction of the dinosaurs to the impact of a huge asteroid on the earth.  This theory has some credibility and, if it is true, it evokes some pretty startling im...

Bringing the Hey day to the here and now

Hollywood Regency, which is the style of Hollywood in its heyday of the 20’s to the 50’s, has a truly sumptuous and unashamedly glamorous appeal. Its an aesthetic rather than a trend that resurges every few years and I absolutely love the key pieces from this super glam era. You only have to show me some of the pieces from the above pictures and I swoon.  I wouldn’t necessarily design an all out Hollywood Regency themed interior, (unless of course it was for an LA-based bar, which would in fact be awesome) just as any dominant interior style can be overbearing on its own, but loosely decorating in this aesthetic adds decadence, sophistication and old world magic. The kitchen below and that dining room table, I mean..... The appeal of Hollywood Regency to me is mixing old with new and infusing contemporary schemes with a regency twist. The style works so well with so many other interior styles that it can be an injection in terms of its hallmark colour palette, furniture and fixture...
